OUR PHILOSOPHY

Why practice Kempo?

The answer is simple – to develop a flexible, strong and harmonious body in which a healthy and balanced spirit will live and grow. Learn non-violent self-defense. Kempo believes that the mind and body are one indivisible whole. Through Kempo's ancient movements, we influence our inner mental states. Through a series of self-confrontations, both physical and mental, Kempo practitioners experience a "sudden" spiritual development.

THE HISTORY OF KEMPO

There is a long path of Kempo Martial Art from ancient India and China, through Ryu Kyu Islands and Japan to Europe. Written proofs of Kempo art begins at 540 AD in ancient China when Indian monk Bodhidharma travels to China to help local Buddhist monks to translate Buddhist texts into the Chinese language. KEMPO YOGA

Kempo Yoga is a series of static and dynamic exercises that include independent work, pair work, breathing techniques, sitting and moving meditation. Kempo Yoga is the ultimate training because it has no boundaries - you set them yourself.

In Kempo Yoga, unlike classical Indian Yoga, the emphasis is on the dynamics of movement.

GASHAKU

From time to time throughout the year, Kempo practitioners gather to practice and learn together at residency seminars. These seminars are called Gashaku (or Gashuku). During Gashaku, all Kempists live together as a community, sharing food and living space (quite often the space of the Dojo itself). At Gashaku, students can develop a spirit of friendship with other students from their own Dojo and from other Dojos, as well as exchange ideas and techniques for mutual benefit. Practicing at Gashaku is usually strenuous and time-consuming, interwoven with discussions and lectures on Kempo topics.

KEMPO TODAY

The Kempo path precedes all forms of Karate. Although it was practiced exclusively as a martial art at certain points in time and certain traditions, Kempo was also a part of the practice of esoteric schools in India and China, from which in its original form it cannot be separated. Kempo practice still contains esoteric philosophy and Mikkyo practice. All three of Mikkyo's primary practices are within the Kempo training. In modern Japan or the Western world, it is difficult to find a school that still trains its students in the ancient inner Path. Properly practiced Kempo possesses and maintains the elasticity of Indian Yoga, the fluidity of Tai Chi Chuan with the power of Ju Jitsu and Karate. The Kempo we teach fits each of these qualities and principles into refined beauty, integrating mental, physical, and spiritual doctrine and practice.

Strength and firmness as in Judo and Ju-jutsu, fluidity as in Tai Chi and Aikido, energy as in Karate and Tae Kwon Do, meditation in motion, that's Kempo today!
